In March, Greenfield Community College’s Sunnydale Campus participated in the Big Pedal, the UK’s largest inter-school cycling and scooting challenge that inspires pupils, staff and parents to choose two wheels for their journey to school. Powered by Sustrans and funded by the Bike Hub, the challenge ran from 2 to 20 March – and Greenfield came 5th in the North East!

On each day of the challenge schools competed across the country to see who could record the greatest number of pupils, staff and parents cycling or scooting to school. The best 10 days determined the final position in the challenge.

The event was organised and run by teacher Donna Randall who said “This is the second year that Sunnydale have participated in The Big Pedal, which actively encourages pupils and staff to think of a more active means to travel to school, increasing everyone's physical activity promoting healthy living  and wellbeing and sustainable travel." Pupils were encouraged to cycle or scoot to school with a daily 'lucky dip' draw for all pupils having a chance to win water bottles / bike lights and other bike and scooter equipment.

As a reward for their achievement in The Big Pedal the school won an Extreme Mountain Bike show performed by Danny Butler, the 5 time British and European bike trials champion and his brother Ashley at the Sunnydale campus last week. The students were awed by their skill and stunts saying it was "out of this world" (Kyle Scott y7) and "Amazing! Ashley and Danny are very skilful!"(Josh Brown y7)

It wasn’t just the students who enjoyed the show – staff had a great time too, as they had also contributed to the competition and this fantastic achievement for Greenfield’s Sunnydale Campus. Mrs Wilkinson, Maths teacher at the school said: "It was one of the most enjoyable hours spent with the pupils watching the Butler Brothers enthuse the pupils and staff, Brilliant!"

Rio Floreza, from Sustrans said “Once again Sunnydale proved themselves to be excellent hosts for yet another Bike It event – this time to cheer on The Extreme Mountain Bike show  in the guise of Danny & Ash Butler – World Trials Bike Champions and Guinness World Record holders. The school recently outpaced other Secondary schools in the region to become overall Durham County winners in the recent Sustrans Big Pedal competition. The Sports Ground proved the ideal venue for Yr 7&8s to look down from the stands and watch the duo perform flips, tricks and stunts and listen to their message of hard work, commitment and positive attitude. Thank you once again to Sunnydale staff for being so responsive in helping engage their pupils with the aims of Bike It and to the pupils themselves for getting into the spirit of the event and hopefully taking some inspiration to remain dedicated to achieving their own dream, goals and ambitions.”

Massive thanks to Sustrans, the Bike Hub and Danny & Ashley Butler for a great day!
