Successful Launch of Little Library in Shildon

posted 3 Mar 2016, 08:33 by
World Book Day at Greenfield Community College saw a hive of activity including: the launch of the second wonderful Little Free Library, the published work of students from both the Sunnydale Campus and Aycliffe Site, with thanks to GAMP AAP for their support in partnership with Greenfield Arts, and the launch of the Suitcase Library full of creative ideas and positive prompts.

The work of the students was created after a workshop with writer Andy Croft, in which he showed how writing and story-telling can inspire others and provoke all sorts of emotions, so much so they have created their own flash fiction stories. The first published copy was placed in the Sunnydale Campus Little Library for all to read and each student also received a copy each in recognition of their hard work.

The first of the Little Free Libraries is on the Aycliffe Site and has been a great asset to the school and community. Both library containers have been created by our students with guidance from the Cree men and they include a variety of books which anyone can borrow or swap for another in its place.

World Book Day also saw the launch of the Suitcase Library by the Youth Cree alongside artist Nicola Golightly. This is something they have been working on for the past couple of months and is a progression on their previous work which included the sharing of their kindness manifesto through gifts of kindness to inspire positivity through creativity.

Writer Andy croft returned to inspire the whole school to develop their love of stories with his book reading and we were joined by St John’s Primary School for a workshop with the writer himself. Students throughout both campuses were gifted a book voucher each and tasked with a reading for success activity. Both staff and students had a great day celebrating World Book Day across campuses, Director of Arts and Creativity at Greenfield Arts said “it is wonderful to come together to share our love of reading and to celebrate the achievements of our students. The Little Free Library, the published flash fiction and the suitcase library are all fantastic pieces of work created by students that will inspire others to explore ideas and respect themselves.”

Please pop by either campus to use the Little Free Library and see the benefits.
