Greenfield STEM club visit the Hitachi Site

posted 20 May 2014, 02:10 by Unknown user

Greenfield Community College’s STEM group had the fantastic opportunity to visit the site of the new Hitachi Railway factory, as part of an exciting piece of project work.

The group were invited and given a tour by David from Shepherd Construction. David explained the progression of the project, from how the company won the bid all the way through to the current state of the build and the importance of the many local contractors working on site.

The students asked insightful questions and gained a better understanding of the scope of the build and what is involved in such a large and important project. Following this visit the STEM group will be designing and working on a live project with Shepherd Construction, giving them the opportunity to put their great ideas into practice.

Greenfield’s STEM club gives students the opportunity to develop the students’ interests in science, engineering, technology and maths. They are often involved in live projects such as this one, including Greenfield Arts “Cutting Loose” project.

Emma Moffat, Assistant Subject Leader for Science at Greenfield and one of the team of teachers leading the STEM club said: 'This was a fantastic experience that will stay with pupils all their lives. It has given a real buzz to STEM club and we are really looking forward to working with Shepherd in the future.'

Thank you to Shepherd Construction for the great tour last week, the keyrings and pens – we look forward to seeing how the project develops!
