Greenfield students abseil off the Transporter Bridge

Last weekend a group of Year 9 students from Greenfield Community College abseiled off the Transporter Bridge in Middlesbrough to raise sponsorship money, who were all raising funds for the school’s World Challenge expedition to Morocco in 2016. Niall Blenkinsop was also completing the aerial challenge for his chosen charity of Rays of Sunshine who grant wishes for terminally ill children.

The expedition to Morocco is an educational travel experience that will allow Challengers to achieve more than they thought possible by stretching them beyond their comfort zone, and this sense of accomplishment has a positive effect on their on-going view of themselves and their place in the world. They have to raise the bar in terms of physical fitness, communication, teamwork and organisation, all highly valuable skills they can draw on in their post-expedition lives. Engaging with other cultures during the Project phase brings global awareness that can’t be gleaned from books. Students return from their expedition with increased energy and enthusiasm and a sense that if they really apply themselves, there’s no limit to what they can do.

The aforementioned and the additional students signed up for the expedition are currently well into their fundraising stage of the project where they have to raise £1,495 to secure their place. Although a huge financial commitment the students are busy utilising a range of different strategies such as car washes, gardening, bungee jumps, raffles, sponsored runs and bake sales to help them realise the ambition of the Morocco World Challenge expedition in 2016.

If any businesses or anyone would like to sponsor or help the pupils in their fundraising efforts would you please get in touch with the school expedition leader, Martin Butterworth via email at
