Promoting British Values

At Greenfield Community College, we actively promote positive and inclusive values which prepare young people for life in our diverse society. We believe these values including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs are core values for everyone living in modern Britain.

Our vision and ethos reflect these values and we seek to embed them into everyday life at Greenfield Community College as we help our students develop into happy, confident, tolerant and successful young people. We believe that education should develop the whole child and we are proud to be an outward facing school and a centre of excellence for global learning. As a Rights Respecting School we are proud that our young people are fully aware of their own rights and those of others and their responsibilities within the local, national and global community.

Democracy

Student voice is strong at Greenfield Community College and is an integral part of Time 4 Success. Students feed into decisions about house charities and campaigns and have regular Voice 4 Success sessions. Students elect their representatives to the Student Leadership Team which meets regularly to discuss how to make Greenfield Community College a better learning environment. The SLT shadows the roles of the Leadership Team and they form a student catering council. Regular student voice sessions are an element of monitoring of teaching and learning and help to inform future planning. The principle of democracy is explored through the curriculum in English, RE and History.

Rule of Law

The importance of rules is established when students transfer to Greenfield Community College and reinforced through all aspects of school life. Through Time 4 Success and assemblies students are taught the need for rules, the values behind them and the consequences of breaking them, both in school and in the wider community. Enquiry 4 Success allows opportunity for discussion and debate about rules and the law and gives students reflection time. This understanding of, and respect for, civil and criminal law is reinforced by visitors from the Police, Fire Brigade and other organisations.

Individual Liberty

We provide a positive culture where students are able to make choices in a safe environment. The school curriculum enables all students to make guided choices regarding future academic pathways. We offer a wide range of activities and clubs designed to allow every student the opportunity to choose to participate in wider school life according to their interests. As a Rights Respecting School we educate students about their rights and personal freedoms and use both assemblies and Time 4 Success as the vehicle to help them to recognise how to exercise these freedoms safely. We deliver specific sessions on e-safety and the use of social media through ICT and assemblies.

Mutual Respect

Mutual respect is at the core of life at Greenfield Community College as a Rights Respecting School and is reinforced everyday through teaching, assemblies, in the corridors, at break and lunchtime and in the day to day interactions between students and staff. Through assemblies, Time 4 Success, Rights Respecting Days and the formal curriculum we teach students to respect others with particular regard to the protected characteristics as defined by the Equality Act 2010 and we raise awareness of hate crime related to the characteristics.

Tolerance of those of Different Faith and Beliefs

At Greenfield Community College we foster tolerance through enhancing students’ understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society and by giving them opportunities to experience such diversity through the curriculum and in extracurricular activities. Assemblies and Time 4 Success provide opportunities for raising awareness of prejudice and prejudice-based bullying. Discussions in all subjects, particularly in RE, History and English reinforce the messages. We offer various opportunities for students to become knowledgeable about other faiths and beliefs through global learning, school visits and visiting speakers of different faiths and cultures.
